The headline to this week's Brainsport Times will get some attention - but it's the story behind the headline that is more important.
Almost two months before winning the title of Ms. World Universal Canada, Pamela Meek quietly registered for the 5KM at next month's Step Up for Mental Health run - presented by Cameco - in her home city of Saskatoon.
And just days after winning her new title, she reached-out to volunteer for Step Up in her spare time - because mental health matters to her.
"I have personally struggled with mental health and addiction throughout my life. I believe it is important to talk openly about these experiences rather than hide them," she explained.
"My message is simple," she continued. "You are not alone, you matter, and your struggles do not define you. For those who may not understand what someone else is going through, I ask that you don’t judge. If you can’t help, choose kindness (because) you never know what someone may be battling behind the scenes."
Meek is also using Step Up to challenge herself.
"I used to be a runner, but over the years I’ve become more of a walker," stated the 42-year-old. "I’m going to challenge myself and try a combination of both, although I’ll probably be doing more walking than running! I’m just excited to be part of the 5K, support the cause, and enjoy the experience."
Away from the pageants and spotlight, Meek works in the mental-health community.
"I currently work for CLASI (Community Living Association of Saskatoon), a non-profit organization where I support adults living with different disabilities," continued Meek.
"I also work with youth involved in the system, providing support and helping them navigate their challenges. I’m very passionate about this work because supporting people, encouraging them, and helping them see their own potential is something that means a great deal to me."
