The best running season is coming

Summer is still here - but the best running season in Saskatchewan is coming!

Fall in our province is the ideal time to run. With the cooler to moderate temps, dry footing on the trails and the incredible colours with the leaves, it's a running paradise.

But are you set-up for success with your shoes? Whether you are a novice runner, in the middle of training or nearing a fall race, Brian Michasiw from Brainsport has key advice in this week's Times.

Question: What are the most important factors to consider when buying shoes for easy training kilometres?

Answer: "Even after my 40 years I’m excited to talk about running shoes. There are so many amazing choices on the market today so it can be overwhelming. But, when you are trying on shoes:

-Balanced: to work well for you they must give you a balanced and level feeling. If you feel your arch caving in or your foot being pushed outward (baby toe side) then they are not the shoes for you.

-Fit: running shoes are not meant to break in or change in their fit. In other words don’t choose shoes that you hope will break in. They won’t."

Question: Many people have been training thru the summer for a fall race. What is your advice for someone searching for race-day shoes?

Answer: "Of course light and fast. But you must be confident they will help you when you transition to fatigue form. In other words consider how the shoes will be when you are really tired and your feet might be swelled. And don’t leave (the shopping) until the last second. (You need) a min of two weeks so you have a few sessions in them."

Question: How important is it to have two pairs of running shoes?

Answer: "I have a hard time answering this question because if I tell people to buy two pairs I look like I’m just trying to sell more shoes. But, it’s pretty important to have 2 pairs in rotation because it gives your body some diversity. Meaning your gait/cadence/ stride/form all changes a bit from one pair to the other."
